Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care

This six-hour Trauma-Informed Care training equips Certified Recovery Peer Advocates (CRPAs) and Certified Addiction Recovery Coaches (CARCs) with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to recognize the widespread impact of trauma and integrate trauma-informed principles into peer support practice. Participants explore the differences between stress, trauma, and PTSD; examine the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study; and learn to identify triggers, re-traumatization, and coping responses that may influence recovery. Through guided discussion, case studies, and mindfulness-based exercises, learners develop strategies for creating emotionally and physically safe environments, fostering trust, and strengthening recovery partnerships. Emphasis is placed on ethical responsibility, self-awareness, and the prevention of vicarious trauma through self-care planning. The course aligns with CRPA and CARC role domains of Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, Recovery/Wellness Support, and Ethical Responsibility, preparing participants to promote safety, empowerment, and healing in diverse recovery settings.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define trauma, differentiate it from stress and PTSD, and identify common triggers and signs of re-traumatization.

  • Apply trauma-informed communication strategies that promote safety, trust, empowerment, and collaboration.

  • Recognize the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on health, behavior, and long-term recovery outcomes.

  • Respond to challenging behaviors with empathy, curiosity, and a “What happened to you?” perspective.

  • Identify signs of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and helper stress—and implement effective self-care practices.

  • Contribute to trauma-informed environments by upholding clear boundaries, predictable routines, cultural humility, and ethical peer support.

*Participants must have access to both audio and video connections. You will be required to have your camera on and participate throughout the training. For more on our virtual student expectations, please click here.
