Harm Reduction: Principles, Practices & Peer Application
Harm Reduction: Principles, Practices & Peer Application is a six-hour interactive training that explores harm reduction as both a social justice movement and a practical framework that promotes dignity, safety, and empowerment for people who use drugs. Through lectures, group discussion, and role-play, peers learn to integrate harm reduction into recovery support by understanding substance use, overdose prevention, and motivational engagement. The course strengthens participants’ capacity to navigate systems of care, uphold ethical boundaries, and model wellness and self-care. Aligned with NYCB domains of Recovery from Addiction, Recovery Coaching, Recovery Education, and Ethical Responsibility, this training enhances participants’ competence in compassion-based communication, safety planning, advocacy, and collaborative recovery partnerships.
After the completion of this training session, participants will be able to:
Explain what harm reduction is to peers who are new to it
Explain the benefits of harm reduction to peers starting their harm reduction journeys
Assess when peers are ready to engage in some level of harm reduction
Describe the impact of opioids on the brain and how they set the stage for addiction
Illustrate the causes, risk, signs, and symptoms of overdose
